What is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a method of re-education of the body and mind. It teaches balance and co-ordination through verbal instruction and the use of the practitioner's hands to guide musculature into a new poise. It teaches us to "un-learn" bad habits we may have fallen into in the way we hold ourselves, allowing muscles and tendons to recover naturally and correctly after injury, illness or disease.

In daily life we place a high demands on our mind and body which result in over-contracted muscle and distorted posture. Our aim is to become aware of the way we think and move in everyday activities, and through this awareness reduce or eliminate the causes of pain and tension.

How can it help me?

Practising the Alexander Technique will help improve the "use" of your body. By releasing tensions built up over the years or correcting bad postural habits, the body is allowed to recover the natural poise and grace of our childhood. It brings a clarity to our thinking and gives us space to manage the stresses of daily life. Breathing is improved and confidence built as the body occupies its natural space, health and well-being are enhanced as we become aware of the way in which we manage our bodies and our lives.
